Replacing a golf cart battery pack is a fairly large purchase. Fortunately, a little routine maintenance can substantially extend their lifespan and keep your cart cruising at peak power. The trick is knowing the specific ground rules for your battery type. Whether you are running traditional flooded lead-acid cells, sealed AGMs, or a modern lithium system, here is how to keep them healthy without the headache.

Traditional Flooded Lead-Acid Batteries

These are the heavy, classic batteries with removable plastic caps on top. They are the most affordable option up front, but they demand the most hands-on attention.

Step 1: Mastering the "Watering" Process

Flooded batteries naturally lose water during the charging process. If you don't replace it, the internal plates dry out and die.

  • How often to check: Pop the caps and check them   every 2 to 4 weeks (more often in hot summer months).
  • What to use: Only use distilled or deionized water. Never use tap, bottled, or filtered water. The minerals in standard water will permanently coat the lead plates and ruin the chemistry.
  • When to add water: Always fill them after a full charge. As batteries charge, the liquid inside expands. If you water them while they are dead, they will overflow and spill acid all over your garage floor once you plug them in.
    • The one exception: If the liquid level is so low that the lead plates are naked and exposed to the air before charging, add just enough distilled water to barely cover the plates. Charge the cart, and then do your final fill.
  • How high to fill: Fill each cell until the water level is exactly 1/8 inch (3 mm) below the bottom of the plastic vent well (the tube extending down into the battery hole). Do not fill it all the way up into the neck.

Step 2: Fighting Terminal Corrosion

If you see white, crusty, or blue-green powder building up on your battery terminals, that is lead sulfate. It creates electrical resistance, makes your cart work harder, and generates dangerous heat.

  • The fix: Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda into 1 cup of warm water (or use a terminal cleaner spray). Spray, pour or brush it onto the terminals (it will fizz as it neutralizes the acid).
    • Scrub the terminals clean with an old toothbrush or wire brush, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and dry everything off with a rag.
  • Spray on a terminal protector spray or dab on a thin layer of petroleum jelly to block future moisture.

Only apply petroleum jelly or protector spray after you connect the batteries and tighten down the terminal clamps, otherwise it will interfere with the connection.

  • Don't skip the torque wrench: Your battery cables need to be snug. Torque them to 65 to 75 in-lbs. If they are too loose, they will spark and melt the lead posts. If they are too tight, you'll strip the threads.

  • Get into the habit of plugging your cart in after every trip, even if you only drove it down the driveway. Lead-acid batteries suffer from "sulfation" if left partially dead, which permanently robs them of capacity.
  • Try to avoid running your cart down until the batteries are totally dead. Keeping your depth of discharge above 50% will make your battery pack last significantly longer.

AGM Batteries

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries are still lead-acid, but the acid is suspended in fiberglass mats. They are completely sealed, meaning you never have to mess with water or worry about spills.

Step 1: Keep It Clean

Even though AGM batteries don't outgas acid like flooded ones, dirt, dust, and dampness on the top casing can create a "bridge" that allows a tiny amount of electricity to slowly drain the battery. Give them a quick wipe down with a damp cloth every now and then.

Step 2: Keep the Terminals Tight

Because AGM terminals are built slightly differently, check the cable connections monthly and make sure they are torqued to 90 to 100 in-lbs. Loose connections on a sealed battery can warp or crack the outer plastic casing.

Step 3: Mind Your Charger Profile

AGMs are incredibly sensitive to overcharging. Make sure your charger has a dedicated "AGM" setting. If you use a charger programmed for standard flooded batteries, it will push too much voltage, trigger the internal pressure valves to pop open, dry out the internal glass mats, and ruin the battery.

Lithium (LiFePO4) Batteries

Lithium batteries are the ultimate upgrade for golf carts today. They are incredibly lightweight, require zero water or acid maintenance, and pack a massive punch. However, they do have a couple of unique vulnerabilities.

Step 1: The Golden Rule of Cold-Weather Charging

You can drive a lithium golf cart in freezing temperatures without any issues. However, you must never charge a lithium battery if its internal temperature is below freezing (32°F / 0°C).

  • Attempting to charge a frozen lithium cell causes a chemical reaction called "lithium plating." This permanently destroys the battery's capacity and can create a dangerous internal short circuit.
  • While high-quality lithium packs have a built-in Battery Management System (BMS) that should automatically block cold charging, it is always safest to let the cart warm up in a garage before plugging it in on a freezing winter day.

Step 2: Don't Store Them at 100%

Lead-acid batteries love to sit at 100% charge, but lithium chemistries actually get chemically stressed when they are held at maximum capacity for weeks or months on end. If you are going to leave your cart sitting unused for more than a few days, let the charge naturally drop to a happy medium (around 50% to 80%).

Unlike older battery technologies, lithium batteries do not have a "memory." You don't need to run them down before charging. You can plug them in for 15 or 20 minutes between rounds of golf or quick trips without doing a single bit of damage.

Off-Season Storage: How to Keep Batteries Alive in the Winter

If you park your golf cart for the winter, your storage routine depends entirely on your battery chemistry:

  • For Flooded & AGM Batteries: Charge them to 100% and then completely disconnect the main positive and negative cables. This stops clock dials, GPS units, or key switches from slowly draining your pack over the winter. Check on them every 30 to 60 days and give them a refresh charge if needed.
    • The Danger: A fully charged lead-acid battery won't freeze until it hits a brutal -92°F (-69°C). But a dead lead-acid battery (around 40% charge) can easily freeze at a mild 16°F (-9°C). If it freezes, the ice will expand, bend the plates, crack the case, and leave you with a giant, useless plastic block in the spring.
  • For Lithium Batteries: Discharge or charge the pack so it sits right between 40% and 60% State of Charge (SoC). Shut off the physical run/tow switch or disconnect the battery leads. Lithium batteries have an incredibly slow self-discharge rate (usually under 3% a month) and will happily sleep all winter. Just check on them once every 6 months to ensure they stay hovering around that 50% mark.
